I ride a deer. No, I did not! Quad bike, yes.
I took the chance to check out Mondikot Deer Camp at Papar area, which is all about camping and eating deer (if you like). Don’t worry, these are Australian deer that the owner kept for years.
A night at Mondikot Deep Camp:
City dwellers, why not plan for a perfect getaway and reconnect with the nature at this end of year? It is such a rare environment where you find deers wandering around the area that you are going to camp for the night in Sabah, and Mondikot Deer Camp is definitely a must visit. Open to the public officially in January 2016, facilities in Mondikot Camp are great which include common bathrooms and toilets, recreational or dining area and an open-air concept kitchen, equipped with Barbeque pit are available at all times. Except for WIFI and phone connection.
My colleague asked if I am free that Saturday and would like to bring me to explore a camping ground which has a deer farm. I was like “What?”. This is new, totally new to me because I have not heard anything about deer farm in Sabah before. So, why not? I’m all set and ready to go.
How to get there?
4WD. Trust me. Only a 4WD will be able to reach that place. So, remember to drive one or simply hire one. Expect to drive through crazy roads and hills, but you won’t regret once you are nearer to the destination – calming forest and river view. It takes about an hour drive from Donggongon where my colleagues and I were supposed to meet up. We manage to reach the place by using a Ninja King and a Hilux.
The camp is situated in the upper Papar River. Driving into the tropical greenery at Kg. Mondikot, the camp sits on an area of approximately 10 acres, between 2 villages of Kg Kaiduan and Kg Bolotikon.
I'm lost in Papar.. having an adventure at Mondikot Deer Camp. It's only RM30 per head for one camp (2 pax sharing) Facilities all well prepared for you. Can't stand the heat? There's chalets ready for you. 😄 #Papar #Sabah #journalist #writer #travel #SabahMalaysianBorneo #explore #deer #camp #camping
To Camp or To Stay Indoor?
There are 20 tents available for rent as you wish to stay overnight. No worries, the camp provides sheltered camping ground and campfire sites for adventurers (the toilet is just located next to the camping ground with indoor shower). It cost RM35 per head for a tent that fits 2 adults or RM25 for 2 children. Affordable right?
However, families or groups of friends who would prefer to have a more comfortable stay, the camp offers detached chalets with bathroom facilities en-suite. At the moment, there are 2 chalets that cost RM 210 per night for a twin sharing, which includes built with air-cond. If you don’t mind to be cosier to fit 3 persons in a room, just simply add another RM50 for extra mattress. There are 2 chalets for now and 3 more coming!
Mondikot Camp provides all essentials and encourages guests to prepare and cook their own meals. So don’t forget to marinate your meat a day earlier! Guests who spend their day at the camp also aimed for the delicious and fresh Australian deer meat which the camp is selling at RM18 per kg. The camp will help guests to prepare the fresh deer meat, all ready to be barbequed or cook in your own ways.
So, when it comes to traveling, food is a must. On my first trip to Mondikot Camp on August 6, we brought tons of food to be barbequed that day. There are a few of us that day, which I made a few new friends! They are all friendly and helpful (with setting up the BBQ pit and food). I’m a princess! Feed me. Lol. I must say, this bunch of guys is really a good cook. Some of them are really chefs! They have the idea of using beers and liquors to grill the chicken wings and deer meat. I’m in luck. Who wants to be me?
Facilities and What to do there
Besides pure relaxation in an outdoor living environment, a variety of activities ranging from Campfire and BBQ, Swimming and Game Fishing, Jungle Trekking, Trail Orienteering, Kayaking, Rafting, Bird Watching, Wildlife glimpse and seasonal fruit sampling. There are two units of ATV (all-terrain vehicle) for use too! Some people came to the place to have team building activities too! By night, bonfire activity is a must-do. Everyone would be seated around the fire and chat away between snacks. Don’t forget to bring some warm clothing as night could be chilly at times!
So, grab the chance to get yourself away from the crazy city lives!
