Since they opened its door in April 2016 a year ago, Joe Sun is known for unique, weird, creative and daring menu that offers Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner – still serving!. Located at Damai Plaza, this cafe is designed with a minimal and nature-led interior. I love how the owners add colours to the cafe by having ferns in pots all filled up at the back wall that brings the whole cafe alive!
Douglas, the owner is from the same high school as I went. Hail #smallsaints!
Coffee or latte lover?
People turn to coffee for many different reasons – enjoy the social aspect to enjoy with friends or need a cup of caffeine.
Fancy a cuppa? Hence, I had the Rainbow Latte, Mocha, and Caramel Macchiato – So strong! Two shots + cream and caramel on top only while I was having a chit chat with the owner, Douglas. Well, rumour has it but I have to ask what does ‘Joe Sun’ refers to. Indeed, the name of the cafe simply means “zhou san” (good morning) in Cantonese, which it has almost the same pronunciation. Another saying – “have a cup of joe” in Western countries also has its place here on Joe Sun’s name. Its origins are still a bit mysterious – Google it!. If you are not a coffee drinker, we recommend the Green Tea Latte and seasonal Taro Latte – I like but you may not! Taste like ice cream.
Never ending signatures
Knowing that the cafe has changed their menu four times since their opening, the team has been constantly creating more unique menu apart from keeping their popular and signatures. What we noticed that they complement many of their dishes with salted egg yolk – oh my. Having to see the beautifully stacked signature Chicken ‘n’ Waffle placed in front of me, I thought it was Thousand Island sauce, but it’s not. It’s the generous portion of salted egg yolk sauce. That was mind-blowing!
Tips: although picture is a must but best to eat it when it’s hot!
What else on the menu?
The White Cream of Slipper Lobster Pasta is one of our favourites! An admittedly pricey ingredient, lobster fancies up any meals and the sauce is rich with the essence of lobster. Have an Asian twist, try the Dry Butter Prawn Fried Rice topped with egg floss. How to guzzle this dish? Mix it all up and trust me, you wouldn’t want to share with your friends!
Walk in or call them up!
Joe Sun Coffee & Co also open for catering and delivery services. At some days, the cafe will be closed for private events. Don’t forget to follow their social media for updates! To have a casual meet up with affordable meals below RM20, let Joe Sun greet you “zhou san”!
